One of the largest industries in the world today is the car industry. One of the reasons the automobile industry continues to thrive is that it has constantly redefined what the consumer needs most. The extravagant car of just a few years ago does not make sense in a precarious economy and the trends in the industry show just that.

Maybe you are beginning to think, “it is time to sell my car“, and are looking at what the trends are now. With gas approaching $5.00 a gallon, the big gas guzzlers of the 70s and 80s are falling by the wayside. No one wants to take a large chunk of their hard-earned paycheck and dump it into the gas tank.

There are some great developments in the car industry, and we continue to see quality cars with amazing new styles. What was formerly considered the “car of the future” is becoming a reality – the hybrid car. For years car manufacturers have worked feverishly to produce a car that is not so dependent on gas. Is a hybrid the right car for you? Maybe. The hybrid is becoming more and more affordable as the technology is constantly being refined. Turning an old clunker or a well-loved pre-owned into cars for cash can help with the cash flow as well.

Cars are now designed with energy and gas conservation in mind. Redesigned car bodies help get better gas mileage, while keeping in mind that the average consumer is still interested in style and comfort. As consumers, we must be ever conscious of the environment, so that when the next big trend comes along we will be able to embrace it.

Recipients of Cherokee County discovered that something was wrong with the funding of schools in the county when officials decided to transfer seventeen of the twenty employees of the Cherokee County Career and Technology Center. To add fuel to fire, contracts of remaining three employees were terminated. This effectively meant that the Technology Center would no longer operate in the county.

The residents of the county were unhappy at the decision. The were unhappy that children in the region would have to travel beyond the county for better educational options. Their ire was aroused primarily because the poor economic condition of the schools was never publicized. The closure served as the first notice of trouble in the system.

The state of Alabama permits county commissions to approve an increase in tax as long as it is being utilized for the school system. Increasing the tax for any other reason requires approval from higher authorities. Many persons are raising a pertinent question as to why this option was not exercised to prevent the center from closing down.

While universal support for increase in tax is absent, most individuals are prepared to face yet another financial burden as long as it helps children of the county enjoy better educational and employment chances. In public meetings, students who passed out of the technology centers described how it helped poor students enjoy an education that was beyond their reach due to their poor financial condition. It remains to be seen whether the county officials will bow to public demand.

North Carolina is a gorgeous state. It has just about anything you could want to see from mountains to oceans. One of the most beautiful places is Cherokee county.

Cherokee County

Three towns comprise Cherokee county. These are Murphy, Andrews and Brasstown. They are nestled down in the Great Smoky Mountains. Everything around it is green and lush. The Smokies are part of the Apalachian mountains which are thought to be some of the oldest mountains in the world. The beautiful mountains were home to the Cherokee Indian tribe before the tragic “Trail of Tears” drove most of them to Oklahoma. The few who were able to hide out were later granted land in Cherokee county.

Climate

You will be able to experience all four seasons in Cherokee county, North Carolina. There is snow in the winter and heat in the summer. The nicest part about this location though is that it is quite a temperate climate. The sun shines a little over half the time year-round. It is said of the area that you get a little of everything but nothing lasts long enough to be annoying.

Entertainment

If you are touring in the area there are all kinds of festivals and mountain type competitions to see and experience. There are bluegrass festivals and kayak tournaments. You can go on your own or with a guide for some excellent fishing and camping. Cherokee county is also home to the Cherokee Indian Reservation with a population of about 12,500 people. You can also find the Cherokee Bear Zoo and Exotic Animals waiting for you to stroll through.

Since 1934 residents of the town of Murphy, North Carolina have been coming to the Henn Theatre to enjoy the big screen. While the cost of a ticket has gone up since then people still come to the theater to enjoy a nice night out or an afternoon adventure. Today, with progress continuing to move through the area, the theater is getting a some modern features to ensure that it stays one of the best places to visit within Cherokee County.

Recent renovations to the Henn Theatre include a new surround sound system to make sure each and every ticket holder feels like they are right in the middle of the action. Concessions are also a new feature of the facility. It is now possible to enjoy a drink or a snack while taking in a show. The area is slowly expanding, working to maintain the historical value while pairing it with the technology necessary to keep guests coming in. That includes the recent change in payment options. Now movie goers can pay with the debit or credit cards!

On March 12, the Henn Theatre had a set back when fire destroyed some of the property. But residents know that nothing can keep the Henn Theatre down. Since then the facility has received new flooring and curtains. The next set of plans involves the creation of the Henn Memory Area. Before or after seeing a recently released film patrons can stop by and learn more about PJ Henn, the theater’s founder as well as the theater itself.

When you think about serial killers, you generally think about watching them be captured, and wondering what could cause a person to want to do horrible and grisly things to other people. But when you really think about it, sometimes these are people who are so psychologically messed up there simply is no possible reason for what they do. So it makes sense that you want to be as far away from a person like that as is humanly possible.

So it’s a good time to check out moving quotes, and take the best possible deal to get to a state where there aren’t as many serial killers. Believe it or not, North Dakota and Minnesota are some of the least violent states, and they have some of the lowest likelihoods of being murdered by some random sociopath. While you might not be in the old west, you do still have the chance to get out of Dodge, by way of getting to a place where the psycho quotient is substantially lower. In this way, you can increase your life expectancy by a wide margin.

Sometimes the best thing you can do is to just move. While it might seem like you’re running away from a problem instead of solving it, sometimes getting out of there is really all you can practically do. After all, it isn’t like a famous serial killer is going to don a bowler hat so you can recognize him before he strikes. All you can really do is lower your likelihood of having something terrible happen to you, and stay vigilant in case of worst-case scenarios.

Ski vacation is the best one to stay active with the family members or friends. The reward for planning the vacation properly is enormous such as thrilling descents, face shots, mountain views, and beautiful mornings. To enjoy the ski vacation, it should be properly organized or planned. Here are some quick tips to plan the vacation properly.

The first major role is played by budget or cost of the vacation. The travelers’ first need to plan out the money they are willing to spend on their vacation as it determines all the other things related to ski vacation such as destination and rentals. Therefore, according to the money, it is better to plan for some realistic destinations. After choosing the destination, it is better to talk with the friends or family members to know whether they are comfortable with the trip.

Next after deciding the destinations, it’s time to decide upon the ski resort. If any non-skiers are coming in this vacation, it is better to choose a resort that has other active and alternative activities for them such as spas and shopping. Also, chosen resort should have slopes that cover the ability of each skier. Today, there are many travel agents and websites that provide package deals in very affordable rates.

Other arrangements should be done well-ahead of time and it includes car rentals, room rentals, plane tickets, and shuttle. It is a best practice to make a list while packing and before traveling it is best to ensure that all the key items are packed.

In the western part of Cherokee County lies the Western North Carolina regions which includes various towns such as Andrews, Murphy, Peachtree, Ranger, Marble and a few others. Whats fascinating about this region is the Blue Ridge Mountain and the surrounding Great Smoky Mountains. The who valley is is spread on hundreds of miles. There are numerous rivers and waterways that are found in this picturesque valley that pull people again and again to this region.

The mountain range is steep and reaches to the sky which brings trekkers to this place from around the world. If someone lists top ten trekking destinations in America, this would definitely be in the list at the top five. There are no well-defined trails for trekking here, which makes it more fun. The joy of getting lost in civilization the same way that Cherokee Indians did thousands of years ago is a joy that cannot be defined in words. There are many ancient sites located in this Western North Carolina region. Most of them are found, a few are yet to be found, you could be one of the few people who actually does find a new ancient artifact. Many destinations in this region are still known by their old native tribal names that were given by the Cherokee tribes that lived here for thousands of years. This region was the last stronghold of the Cherokee tribe who protected this land as their motherland. This place is dotted with numerous waterways and districts which make this area fertile. All the waterways are still known by their tribal names. The area is marked by the Nantahala National Forest in the north and east which border this vast region.

Cherokee County has the highest number of educated citizens in America. Its percentage of students who go on to study till college is above 90 percent, some say that it is close to 96.1 percent. The government has passed stiff laws in the country which are applied with higher degree of accuracy in all the towns of Cherokee County. The form of education provided is comprehensive for children in high schools from children in primary schools.

The schooling experience in Cherokee is modified to better get students interested in gaining knowledge and more exposure to real world problems. This is the reason that more than 96 percent of the high school students pass and go on to become graduates and undergraduates. This is a remarkable feat for a county where prestigious universities such as the Iowa State University is present. Schools are ordered to be at least an hour’s drive from the school so that students do not have to spend a long time travelling to schools. The districts that handle the K-12 schooling are the Cherokee Community School, Marcus Meriden Cleghorn School, Aurelia School district and the river valley school district. The higher education system is handled by the Western tech community college, Northwest Iowa community college, Brair Cliff University, Dort college, Morningside college and Northwestern college. These education bodies all have well defined and tested schooling techniques which is carried out by experienced and trained teachers. Almost 40,000 students study in the public and private schools of Cherokee County. Many new residents come to Cherokee County to give their children the best education combined with surroundings. Students from Cherokee county are one of America’s best students who take part in every national competition.

Ghost Towns are a part of American history with abandoned towns scattered all over America. These towns are majorly found in Texas and Atlanta. Most of these ghost towns were created after the gold rush of the eighties that brought thousands of people from around the world. These people created hundreds of new buildings and complete cities where they did not exist to use the gold as their lively hood. And since there was no other source of income for the towns, they fell as soon as the gold sources depleted. This is the reason that today most towns located far off in the woods without proper roads leading to them.

Some of the ghost towns are found in Cherokee county in the Blanche and Jamestown region that is connected to the little river area. The area is part in Atlanta and part in Cherokee County. These towns are said to contain hidden treasures worth thousands of dollars. This is one reason that these towns attract people who come with metal detectors to these places to get lucky. The towns are especially very popular among photographers who come to this place to fill their memory cards with loads and loads of memories. The towns serene atmosphere gives the feeling of being alone in a town its not a soul in sight. It a scintillating experience to say the least. The towns become completely different places at night. With the absence of light, the entire town is lit by moon light and star lights. Trekking is the best way to reach these towns because of unavailability of proper roads. Roads which once were created have been eclipsed by forest from which it had initially carved out.

In recent years, the credit crunch has forced a lot of people to take drastic measures, just to keep on living at a standard of living that resembles the one that they had before. However, as the credit crunch begins to lift, and people are less afraid of losing their jobs and being unable to get any kind of loan for anything, they are more concerned about making sure that their monthly payments are at a reasonable level. And it seems that North Carolina is leading the charge, as this conservative state takes a personal step toward throwing off the shackles that the recession placed on just about everyone.

If there is one thing that a southern state hates, it is being carpet bagged by wealthy people who may or may not be from the North. North Carolinians have recently decided to take a stand against their ridiculously high car payments, and have been some of the first in line as car loan refinance opportunities begin to poke up like the first blooms of the spring. Being able to afford their payments is only a small part of the problem, as the issue stems primarily from the desire of North Carolinians to be able to afford things in life other than the ability to keep their cars.

After all, the ability to simply maintain a lifestyle is just the bottom layer, reserved for people who are desperate and who might still give up hope at any moment. As the economy looks up, however, these intrepid individuals are taking the bull by the horns and doing everything they can to make their hard-earned money go further. After all, the people who had mediocre to bad credit a few years ago may now have decent to downright good credit now. There is no reason why a person who has good credit should have to pay the same amount per month in better times.

Tahlequah is located in the Cherokee County and is a quintessential American city in all rights. It has an abundance of 80’s architecture that feels like you are in that time and place. The town is also famous for its outdoor recreation activities which the Tahlequah citizens swear by.

To get in touch with the history of Tahlequah, you will have to visit the Thompson House that is one of the jewels of Tahlequah’s historic past. Although the home was built only in 1882, it has its roots stuck way into the past. The architecture is an example of the Queen Anne Carpenter Gothic architecture which is decorated internally with a delicate woodwork that is Eastlake style. The person on whose name this house is built upon was a very prominent person in the Cherokee history and helped built the Tahlequah city. He was a Doctor by profession who held important positions in the city. He lived in this home till the 1930’s after which this place was restored and named a national monument. Another similar place of historical significance is the Murell Home in Park Hill. This is located outside of Tahlequah, but is as much a part of Tahlequah as the Thompson house. This home was built in 1845 by a Scottish man known as Murell. The home is an example of the high class of lifestyle common around here. The Cherokee Heritage center is another example for the rest of America to follow to preserve their history and culture. The museum is built of stone concrete that were procured from the natives and also has the first learning center for women as part of the Cherokee National Female Seminary. It has some one of a kind Cherokee tribe uniforms that are clothes of some of the greatest Indians of the Cherokee tribe and a few from other Indian tribes too.

Cherokee County is one of the few places in America where the government take special interest in the maintenance of parks and other recreational areas that are important for every town. But Cherokee is one place where not just the government takes initiatives to maintain the green cover, but here also concerned citizens who take special initiatives to make this place more welcoming and nature friendly.

One of the most powerful bonds that protect the green cover of Cherokee County is the Parks, Recreation and Green Space Bond. This bond was created in 2008 by the citizens of Cherokee County through an election ballot. As a part of the move to ensure a greener and healthier future, the Cherokee County officially make it mandatory to provide parks and green space for the present and future generations. The natural areas are also maintained so that nature and humans can live in perfect harmony. Sitting areas, paved walking trails, waste free greenery and camping sites are all part of the Parks, Recreation and Green Space Bond. The local dog owners are also allowed in the parks and recreational areas so that they can run and play with their favorite mates without getting into any trouble. The park equipment is made safe for children of all ages so that they do not get into any trouble. Fields for baseball and football are maintained as part of this bond along with a gym center, Aquatics center, skate park and other improvements are all made so that people can spend some time outside of their homes. The bond has received more than $90 million in funding from the government to make all these efforts a reality for the citizens and well as tourists to Cherokee County. It has special powers from the government which can be used to safe guard the forest properties from timber merchants and wild life poachers.

A new History Museum and Visitors Center was unveiled on Cherokee County, GA on February 5th Saturday. The new center is located on the 100 North street, Canton, GA in the historic courthouse. The center was hosted by the Cherokee County Chamber of Commerce.

The center will feature the display of the Cherokees tribe that occupied this are before their removal from here. The center is located in the first floor of the Marble courthouse. The museum is open from Wednesday to Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The museum has become popular among school going children.

The center does a really good job or outlining the history of the area in the displays that it has. The home work done prior to setting up this museum has been a daunting task for the museum authorities who only numbered 2.

The Cherokee County was inhabited for thousands of years by the prestigious Cherokee Tribe and other native Americans bore their forced exit in 1830. The land along the Etowah River, was inhabited by Cherokees and Creeks whose profession was fishing, hunting and farming. Around the 1755 a battle between the Creeks and Cherokees was fought which was won by the Cherokee. The Creeks were forced out of the land through the Chattahoochee River. Cherokees sided with the French and British troops in various wars which reduced their numbers along with small pox and failed treaties were the reasons for further population decline. In the 1789-1833 a number of policies by the central governments were passed to force the Indians to live in a civilized manner. They began to become over dependent on farming for their livelihood. They also began to gain wealth and could afford themselves to buy slaves. These Cherokee tribes were in time forced by the federal governments to give up their lands. The discovery of gold in Northern Georgia attracted gold rushers into the county which further pushed the Cherokees away from here. Cherokees have now joined the list of Indian tribes like the Seminoles who obtain special rights from the government and enjoy special privileges.

Cherokee County has been hit by a wave of snow storm that are making accidents the order of the day. The roads are covered with a thin sheet of ice that is making travelling unmanageable for everyone and tourists have completely stopped.
This is a part of the storm that has hit two thirds of America and is putting normal life haywire. The met department predicts more snow in the coming days and is asking people to stay prepared with fuel and other commodities in case power and roads are cut. There is an eighty percent chance o f precipitation with freezing rain and temperatures below zero degrees. The temperatures are set to be around 39 degrees in the day with a low of 20 degrees at night. Sunday although will come with a bit of sunshine with temperatures as high as 63 degrees.

The snow is set to return again according to the satellite pictures. The police have set warnings and emergencies on all roads and highways, which has avoided any major accidents till now. The number of tourists is completely dwindled. People are driving sensibly which has made the job of emergency services easier. There have been just 20 accidents were taken place on highway number 69 and 79. These accidents saw no major fatalities or accidents. A few people were stuck in the snow with broken down cars that had kept the AAA services on their feet at all times. There were 16 accidents on the streets of Jacksonville that too with no major fatalities or injuries. There were a few accidents that involved only one vehicle with no major injuries. Many smaller accidents went unreported with any complaints to the authorities. There were many complaints of water cuts, because of frozen pipelines and burst pipes. The water department was kept busy because of this. The electricity was temporarily cut off in a few areas where fallen power lines were being serviced.

The eastern coastline has been quite dangerous for incoming ships over the years, so dangerous in fact, that’s the coastline in North Carolina has been dubbed the “Graveyard of the Atlantic.” As such, there have been eight unique lighthouses constructed on the shores in North Carolina, all of which provide photo opportunities, as well as safe fun for you and your family while you’re vacationing in North Carolina.

The lighthouses have been a vital instrument in guiding ships safely to port for over two centuries. The lighthouses are approximately forty miles from each other, making it possible to see more than one in a day. The lighthouses are as follows:

Oak Island Lighthouse, built in 1958, is not open for public viewing.

Bodie Island Lighthouse is located near Whalebone Junction and is not open to the public, though there is a visitor’s center.

Roanoke Marshes Lighthouse is the newest of the lighthouses. It was built in 2004 and is home to a museum about the maritime history of Roanoke.

Old Baldy, is located on Bald Head Island and was built in 1878, making it the state’s oldest lighthouse. Take a tour and check out the observation deck at the top.

The Cape Hatterras Lighthouse is 208 feet tall and was constructed in 1870. The structure was moved to its current location back in 1999.

The Ocracoke Lighthouse was built in 1823, making the oldest lighthouse that is constantly used on the eastern coastline. This location is not open to the public for tours.

The Cape Lookout Lighthouse is one of the most popular lighthouses in North Carolina. It was built in 1812 and is decorated in an unusual diamond pattern. It is still in use today.

Some of the lighthouses are not open for tours, but they still present opportunities for some great pictures.

Those who love the off-road experience will jump at the chance to take a day out at the Upper Tellico Off-Road Vehicle Area. If is found between the towns of Murphy, North Carolina and Tellico Plains, Tennessee. This area has received the reputation of having some of the best trails for off-roading there is. You can take out your AllTerrain Vehicle, four wheel drive vehicle and dirt bike, depending on your personal preference.

The area is recaptured from a series of skid trails and roads that were utilized in the past by the logging industry. They offer various opportunities for those who need an easier trail to those who want a highly difficult trail to challenge them. There are a total of 40 miles of trail to explore, and the best area for four wheeling is in the Upper Tellico, where 8,000 acres are available. In this area, the Tellico River runs through a hilly terrain that has steep drop-offs.

You should be aware of any trail limitations, including those limited to certain types of vehicles. A majority of trails are open to various off-road vehicles, but one is limited only to all-terrain style vehicles. The trails with the most challenging and rough terrain require special equipment to get through them. For example, you may need to have specialized tires, a front hook or a rear tow hook to navigate and work through them. The main access road is the only trail that is established as an easier trail to maneuver.

The following trails are included: Tipton Creek, Bear Pen Trail, Tipton Knob Trail, Fain’s Ford Road, State Line Loop, Tellico River Trail, Peckerwood Connector, Bob Creek Trail, Hawk Knob Trail, Mistletoe Connector, Round Mountain Trail and Chestnut Mountain Trail. The Upper Tellico Off-Road Vehicle Area is a sure bet for fun for any off-road enthusiast, whatever vehicle you use.

The Nantahala National Forest is one of Cherokee County, North Carolina’s most beautiful areas, with wild forest and a number of opportunities to play and have a great time in the outdoors. You and your family will have numerous chances to see the sights and find activities that you can all have fun doing. At the Hiawassee River, you can reach an elevation of 1,200 feet at the Appalachian Lake Dam.

Nantahala means “land of the noon day day” from its Native American background. This is because at noon, the sun just reaches its rays into the valley at this time of day.
North Carolina has a rich, varied history that stretches back to the early days of the country. With the Smoky Mountains, the Appalachian Trail and the constant push west, the state has been home to many historical events that had a huge impact on its citizens and the nation as a whole. Recently, local historical societies within the state have worked to preserve its history through the North Carolina History Project.

The program is supported by the John Locke Foundation, which supports efforts to preserve and educate the state’s residents and visitors on the history of North Carolina. The project has a lecture series that have some of the most talented and well-known historians in the United States that speak to various groups. They also provide historical tours and publish a variety of materials on state history that are both academic and for general education purposes.

Another great advantage of this project are the educational materials that can be used by teachers, parents and homeschoolers. There are numerous resources on the Civil War in the state, historical figures, politics, religion and many others. They are made for various middle to high school grades and can be accessed on the project’s website. These are perfect for field trips and class discussion.

The project’s website also features an alphabetized encyclopedia of different aspects of North Carolina’s history. Residents, visitors, educators and those just interested in history can easily peruse through the listings to find what they need. The foundation and its staff works continuously to gather and add to the record of North Carolina’s past, making it readily accessible for the general public.

The North Carolina History Project is a wonderful asset to present and future generations. By compiling the history and stories that tell how North Carolina came to this point it its history, its past will not be forgotten.

The Highland Scottish came to North Carolina primarily in 1739, when the present royal governor of North Carolina persuaded 360 of them to immigrate to the state. These proud people left their native country for various reasons, including political freedom, religious freedom and economic. Many were forced out of their homes and couldn’t afford the extravagent rent prices their landlords were charging, forcing them to seek a new place to settle.

Many had the goal of garnering a grant to a piece of land. They settled down in areas such as Upper Cape Fear and Cross Creek. A good portion were into farming, raising crops like corn and wheat, along with raising sheep and pigs. Others chose to get employment within the naval industry. James Campbell was one of these immigrants, and became well known for helping to set up three different Presbyterian churches in the state. Their primary language at home and at church services was Gaelic, but this changed after the Civil War as the language declined to be used.

When the Revolutionary War began to stir up, many of these Scots fell in line with the Loyalist side of the coin, supporting England. Once the war was finished, those who remained loyal to England moved out of the United States to areas such as Novia Scotia and Barbados. There were many who lost their loyal leanings after the Battle of Moore’s Creek that occurred in 1776.

Those descendants still in North Carolina today continue to show off their heritage, taking part in the Highland Games that are held in July. This event started during a popular rebirth in desire to remember their past. There are other games held, such as the Loch Norman Games. The heritage that stretches back to before the Revolutionary War continues today, determined never to be forgotten.

Guilford Courthouse National Military Park located in Greensboro, North Carolina was the site of a Revolutionary War key battle in the southern part of the colonies. It proved to be the highest point in British activity in America during this time. Two generals squared off, Major General Nathanael Greene with the Americans and Lord Charles Cornwallis leading the British.

Greene was stationed here with 4,500 Continental soldiers and colonial milita to hold the area. Cornwallis was in charge of 1,900 seasoned British troops who were facing an enemy who had greater numbers at their disposal. Cornwallis took the day, defeating a much larger foe but paid a dear price in losing 25% of his men during the fighting. The conflict lasted for approximately two and a half hours, ending with an American retreat. Greene made a strategic move by pulling his forces back, gaining some ground in that he kept the primary fighting strength of his command.

The park visitor center is open from 8:30 AM to 5PM daily, which is the best place to begin your day. You can catch the park film, “Another Such Victory,” which will give you an excellent overview of the events that occurred. There is also a map that has an animated presentation that shows the movement of troops and key moments in the fighting. You can also see artifacts from the battle in the museum.

You can tour the battlefield itself in your car, by walking or riding your bicycle. There are eight areas where you can get insight to the battle’s events. Your tour can be highlighted by a narrated tour explanation that is sold in the visitor center gift shop. There are also two and a half miles of additional walking trails to explore. Guilford Courthouse National Military Park is a beautiful site and a fascinating look into our country’s early history.

Fort Raleigh National Historic Park is the perfect stop on your trip to see some of the first stirrings of settlement in the New World. This area is the site of the beginning known settlements that the English set up in American in the period from 1584 to 1590. In addition, the park serves as a rememberance of the many cultures that were here before the English arrived, such as the Native Americans. The experiences and lives of African Americans who were brought here as slaves are also honored.

You can explore the area by taking the Thomas Hariot Nature Trail, which is about a 20 minute walk through a small wilderness area. By reading many of the signs that are posted along the way, you can get perspective on the experiences of the early explorers. The one and one-quarter long Freedom Trail takes you along the west side of the island where the parks is located. You will get to see what the Algonquians saw when they walked through this part of the area when they made it their home. For those with a historical taste, you can look through the earthworks that the early English colonials set up. These were overseen by Sir Walter Raleigh during the period of 1584 to 1590.

The visitor center at the park can provide you with additional information regarding trails, special events and brochures. There is a park film that highlights the major events and peoples who lived in the area during this early period. You can also check ou the outdoor program titled “The Lost Colony,” which is given from June until August. Fort Raleigh National Historic Park is a definite way to enjoy both the outdoors and to get a sense of our country’s early history.

As the Revolutionary War was being fought, colonials on both sides of the fence were often at odds with each other. This is a case of Moore’s Creek, where approximately 1,000 colonial patriots faced off against a group of loyalists in February of 1776. The bridge spanning the creek had been halfway taken down, and the loyalists coming across its remaining structure were faced with opponents armed with muskets and cannons. The patriot victory here effectively brought an end to the British rule in the area and helped North Carolina to be the first to cast its vote for independence.

You can walk a .07 mile trail that is the remaining section of the roadway traveled by the fighters on both sides. Along the way, you can read more about the battle on one of the many signs posted and visit the site of the bridge. The visitor center will be able to give you a park brochure and more detailed information. Inside, you can peruse the museum, which features artifacts from the battle and various other displays. You can track the fighting on a battle map that highlights how each group moved. The park film will give you a general overview of what occurred.

Your family can take a leisurely stroll through .3 mile forested trail and then stop off at the picnic area for a relaxing lunch. There is also a reenactment of the battle each year in February at the park. You can see people in period dress, camping out and carrying the weapons that were used during that time, along with the sound of period military music being played.

Fort Raleigh National Historic Park offers you the chance to step back into history and experience the conflict of the Revolutionary War years. You will leave with a better sense of the struggle that was necessary to win our independence.

Great Smoky Mountains National Park stretches over the North Carolina landscape protecting both the natural beauty of the area and the history that occurred within its boundaries. This areawas a major source of settlements and passage to those heading for the western portion of the new nation. The Appalachian Trail, which stretches throughout the park, was a common route for both settlers and explorers to take. The stunning sights and soaring mountain peaks draw visitors as much today as the settlers that came here. It continues to dazzle and amaze those that come, almost making you wish you could stay forever.

One of the most popular places in the park to go is Cade’s Cove, where a number of early settlers built homes and established farms. There is a driving tour that features several pull off spots where you can take pictures of the spectacular scenery and visit a number of historical homes. You can walk around an early log cabin that is nestled in a corner of the cove, or pull over by one of the early churches that was founded in the valley. There is an early Methodist and Baptist church that you can go into a walk around, getting a feel for the early life and practices of the settlers.

Throughout this area and others in the park, you can see wildlife in their natural habitat, find a place to camp for the night or rent a bicycle to take out on the trails. It is essential, if you intend to go hiking, that you are aware of the weather for the day and are prepared with the proper gear. The weather in the park can change very quickly and can catch you offguard if you are not ready for it. Altogether, though, Great Smoky Mountains National Park offers you a look into nature’s world and the people who lived in it during the early part of our country’s history.

The Museum of the Abermarle gives an interesting and unique look into the peoples that inhabited this part of the country. This ranges from colonists to Native Americans. They showcase an exhibit titled “Our Story” that focuses on the lives and traditions of the people in the Albermarle area. There are more than 700 artifacts on display, giving perspective into the lives and work of those that work that work on the water, that farmed, were soldiers and did various other trades.

The Proctor Smokehouse was constructed somewhere in the period from 1826 to 1850. The 1755 Jackson House is another spot that you can see inside an early colonial home, with its front parlor, small sleeping area above for the kids and hand built construction. Both of these buildings had to be carefully restored by a specialized carpenter.

History comes alive at the Old Salem Museum and Gardens in North Carolina, where you and your family can spend the day learning about the life of the early colonials. There are a variety of hands-on activities available for people of all ages and a number of special events throughout the year that you can enjoy as well.

Museums and grounds are composed of a group of original buildings from the colonial period. Within each one there are various tradesmen doing their work in the traditional manner. As you travel through and learn about each one, you get to experience life firsthand in a colonial village from the mid-1700s. You’ll be exposed to topics from the times such as religious beliefs, traditions, segregation, politics and the wars that went on during this period.

For example, during the holidays, you can experience a simple and traditional holiday season. The grounds are decorated in colonial style and traditional baked goods are produced at the museum bakery. The festivities run from Thanksgiving through New Year’s, where you can take part in storytelling or a candlelight tour. During the candlelight walk, the museum recommends that you wear warm clothing and that you will have to stand for long periods of time in the cold.

Most of the buildings are open Tuesday through Saturday from 9:30 AM to 4:30 PM and Sunday from 1 PM to 4:30 PM. The remainder of the buildings are open on a rotation schedule. The buildings regularly open include the Market Fire Engine House, Single Brothers’ House, T. Vogler Gun Shop and the Salem Tavern. The other buildings include a print shop, two private residences, St. Philips and the Boys’ School. At the visitor center, you can get the necessary brochures and information to help you navigate to the area. The Old Salem Museum and Gardens are an excellent family day out.
